Synology File Manager

Synology File Manager consists of a server and a client, and is a tool designed for instant file access and transfer between your personal computers and Synology NAS. With Synology File Manager client, you can connect to multiple servers to upload/download files according to your needs, and easily monitor the file transfer status.

Configuring Synology File Manager

Go to the Synology File Manager server > Overview to find the Synology File Manager client installer for Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu (32-bit and 64-bit). Download the installer and then follow the instructions in this section to configure the application.

To set up Synology File Manager:

  1. On your Windows computer, go to Start > All Programs > Synology File Manager to launch the setup wizard.
  2. On your Mac, go to Finder > Applications > Synology File Manager to launch the wizard.
  3. Click Next to continue.
  4. Enter the IP address, Username and Password of your Synology server and click Connect.
  5. On your Linux computer, unzip the installer > cd app > ./run.

To connect to another server:

  1. Click the plus icon in the main app window and enter the IP address/DDNS hostname, Username, and Password of the server you wish to connect to.
  2. Click Connect.

To disconnect from a server:

  1. In the main app window, find the server you want to disconnect from.
  2. Click the ‘x’ to disconnect from the server.

Using Site Manager

To add a new site and apply advanced settings in your address book:

  1. Click the Settings icon on the top right of the main app window.
  2. In the Settings window, click the plus icon and enter the IP address, Username, and Password of the server you wish to connect to.
  3. You can set a Hostname for each connection (optional) as well as configure the following Transfer Settings:
    1. Enter the number of files that can be transferred concurrently in each connection
    2. Set the default folder for file downloads
    3. Set maximum upload and download speeds
    4. Enable encrypted transfer
    5. Enable transfer compression
  4. Click Apply to save your settings.

To delete a site from your address book:

  1. Click the settings icon in the main app window.
  2. In the Settings window, select the connection you want to unlink from the list on the left.
  3. Click the minus icon.

Transferring Files

You can switch between the tabs at the top of the main app window to browse and select the files you want to transfer, and can keep track of current file transfers in Task Manager.

To transfer your files:

  1. Use the tree panel on the left of the main app window to navigate the directories on your computer and server. You can also use the search bar to find and sort files by Name, File type, Size, and Modified Time.
  2. To transfer files, do any of the following:
  3. Your file will now appear in Task Manager.

To monitor your transfers:

  1. You can use Task Manager to monitor the status of your current transfers. Click the Task Manager icon in the main window to launch the Task Manager window.
  2. You can select files and click the icons at the top to stop, start, and pause transfers.
  3. Expand the Task Manager window by clicking the rightmost icon.
  4. Once expanded, you can view more details about each transferred file, including elapsed time, local and remote paths, and its transfer speed.

To prioritize your transfers:

  1. In Task Manager, select the file you want to move up or down the transfer queue.
  2. Use the arrow buttons at the top of the window to move a file up or down to adjust its priority.

To view transfer logs:

  1. In the main app window, click the Log icon to view your logs.
  2. You can switch between File transfer logs and Event logs using the drop-down menu, and search for specific logs with the search bar.

SSL Verification

SSL verification is supported on Synology File Manager desktop client. A warning message will be triggered if any attempt to connect to a website with unknown SSL certificate is detected. You may continue to proceed to the website and view the SSL details by clicking the lock icon on the tab. Your decision to proceed to the untrusted site will be remembered, preventing the warning message from being triggered again during your next visit to the same site.
