WebDAV Server
WebDAV is an extension of HTTP designed to let users edit and manage files stored on remote servers. When WebDAV service is enabled, client programs that support WebDAV, such as certain Windows apps, Mac OS Finder, Linux File Browser, will be able to remotely access the Synology NAS just like accessing a local network drive.
To enable WebDAV:
- Check the box marked Enable WebDAV or Enable WebDAV HTTPS connection if you wish to enable WebDAV connections via HTTPS. The default port for WebDAV is 5005, and WebDAV HTTPS is 5006.
- Click Apply
Speed Limit
Enabling speed limit allows you to control the maximum usable bandwidth for specific users or groups when transferring files via WebDAV.
To enable speed limit:
- Tick the box marked Enable speed limit, or Enable speed limit according to a schedule if you would like to implement a speed limit at specific times only. This is a server-wide setting and will override the settings of individual users and groups. Choosing No speed limit disables the speed limit settings of all users and groups.
- Click Speed Limit Settings to modify the settings for individual users or groups. For each user and group, you can select one of the following:
- Apply Group Settings: The speed limit settings will be the same as the group to which the user belongs.
- None: No speed limit will be applied when group members transfer files with the service.
- Constant: A fixed, constant speed limit will be applied to the user or group members. Upload and download speed limits can be specified in the fields to the left.
- Variable: Two different speed limits can be specified and applied to the user or group members according to a schedule. Click the Customize button to modify the speed limit settings and set a schedule.
- Click Apply.
Note:
- For more details regarding group speed limit dynamics, please see DSM Help > Control Panel > File Sharing > Group > Edit a Group.
- When setting speed limit for a user, the Result section displays the user's actual speed limit according to his individual and group settings. For example, if a user "Achilles" has an individual download limit of 100 KB/s, but belongs to a user group with a download limit of 500 KB/s, then the Results section will display "0/500."
Advanced Settings
Clicking the Advanced Settings buttons allows you to modify the following options:
- Enable Anonymous WebDAV: Allows clients to access shared folders using the "anonymous" user name when connecting via WebDAV. Make sure the "Anonymous FTP/WebDAV" user has been assigned proper access privileges on the Shared Folder page.
- Enable DavDepthInfinity: When using a client tool, this allows users to access or delete files without file path length restrictions.
- Enable WebDAV log: This options records events related to WebDAV. Click View Logs, and you will see the logs in the pop-up window.
Using WebDAV with Different Operating Systems
Once WebDAV has been enabled on your Synology NAS, please follow the instructions below to begin accessing files with Windows, Mac, Linux devices or certain Synology smartphone apps.
Note:
- When connecting with WebDAV services, we suggest using a WebDAV client with UTF-8-support in order to avoid encoding errors.
For Windows
For Windows users who would like to use WebDAV protocol to access files on Synology products, we suggest using BitKinex, a drive mapping application which is free for non-commercial use. Alternatively, there are many other WebDAV client applications available on the Internet.
Note:
- If you would like to use Windows's Map Network Drive to access files on your Synology NAS via WebDAV, please obtain a valid SSL certificate and access to your Synology NAS via an HTTPS connection. When using WebDAV service under Windows environment, if you want to switch to another user account, you need to log out of Windows system first.
For Mac
For Mac users, you can connect to your Synology NAS via WebDAV by simply using Finder.
To use WebDAV on Mac:
- On your Mac computer, go to Finder > Connect to Server.
- In the Server Address field, enter your Synology NAS IP address or domain name preceded by "http://" and followed with ":5005" (or whichever port number you specified when enabling WebDAV service). For example: http://pm.synology.com:5005/.
- Enter your DSM user name and password.
- Click Connect.
Note:
- WebDAV supports Bonjour broadcast.
For Linux
For Ubuntu or other Linux users, please follow the instructions below to access files on your Synology NAS via WebDAV.
To use WebDAV on Ubuntu:
- Click Places > Connect to server.
- Select WebDAV (HTTP) or WebDAV (HTTPS) from the drop-down menu.
- Enter the information required, including server location, port, folder, and user account. Click Connect to continue.
- Enter your password and click Connect.
To use WebDAV via Linux command line:
If you'd like to use command line, you can use cadaver, a command-line WebDAV client software to setup access.
