Browse Music

After selecting one of the audio sources on the left panel, you can browse its contents in the display area of Audio Station by changing views and using the search field to find your music quickly.

Can't browse your music?

If you see unreadable song titles, album names, or artist names while browsing through your music, go to DSM to set the correct codepage that matches the language of your computer, and then re-index your music. Open DSM Help, and see Language (Control Panel > System > Regional Options) and Search Music for more information.

Home

When you open Audio Station, you will first see Home where you can easily play the pinned music collections from My Pins, or enjoy the songs categorized according to music genres in Recommended Genre.

Personal Music Library

DSM admin or users belonging to the administrators group can enable personal library to allow Synology NAS users to have their own personal music library. Once users' personal library is enabled, they can choose to browse and play either their own personal music or both shared and personal music.

To enable personal library for Synology NAS users:

  1. Click Settings and then click the Personal Library tab.
  2. Tick Enable Personal Library and click OK.

To browse and play music collection:

  1. Select either of the following to browse and play music in the main area of the Audio Station:
  2. Click OK. File indexing will be performed right away.

Having trouble displaying album artwork?

What if your music file formats are not supported by Audio Station? You can still add album artwork yourself by following the tips below.

  1. Prepare image files you want to display on album cover. The format of the images must be JPG.
  2. Rename the files to any of the following: cover.jpg, Cover.jpg, COVER.jpg, folder.jpg, Folder.jpg, FOLDER.jpg, albumart.jpg, Albumart.jpg, AlbumArt.jpg, ALBUMART.jpg
  3. Place the JPG files in the corresponding subfolders containing music files under the "music" shared folder.
  4. Open Audio Station to start playing songs whose file location has the JPG file just added. You should be able to see the image shown on Audio Station.

Search Music

You can enter keywords in the search field at the top-left corner of Audio Station to quickly find the music you are looking for.

To search music files:

To re-index audio files:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Indexing Service.
  2. Under the Media Indexing section, click Re-index to reconstruct the index structure of the audio files if you found missing music in Audio Station. The process will be executed in the background.

Note:

Audio Station does not index .mp4 files. You may manually change the file extension from .mp4 to .m4a to successfully display and manage these files in Audio Station.

CUE Sheet Support

With a CUE sheet (a text file that indexes audio tracks of music files), Audio Station can display accordingly all indexed audio tracks and song information of an undivided album file for management.

To enable CUE sheet support:

  1. Go to Settings > Options > CUE Sheet Support, and tick Show all tracks by the CUE sheet.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Place the music file and its CUE sheet into a folder (e.g., a subfolder of music) in your Synology NAS.
  4. Go to Library to find the generated songs by the CUE sheet.

With audio tracks displayed, you can browse and select tracks to add to other playlists or the playing queue, for song rating and sorting, and for playback via specific players.

Manage Lyrics Plugins

Enabling lyrics plugins added to Audio Station allows you to search lyrics on the Internet and save the lyrics. You can listen to music with live lyrics display.

Lyrics is also available under either of the following circumstances:

To enable lyrics plugins and search lyrics online:

  1. Go to Settings > Lyrics Plugin, click Add to choose a file to upload, and click Add when the file is selected. The plugin will appear in the grid.
  2. Tick the checkbox to enable the plugin, and click OK.
  3. After enabling the plugin, right-click a song on the song list and choose Song information.
  4. Click the Lyrics tab to view the lyrics for the song. If no lyrics is shown in the window, click Search Internet to search lyrics on the Internet.
  5. The search results will be displayed in the window that appears. You can preview the beginning few lines of the lyrics if available. Select a result and click OK to apply.
  6. You may click the Next or Previous button to browse to or edit the lyrics of the next or previous song on the list consecutively.
  7. Click Save when finished.

Edit Music Information

With Audio Station, you can view as well as edit the information of music files and song lyrics.

Note:

To search and update song information online:

  1. Select one or more songs (preferably from the same album and artist), and right-click to choose Search information online.
  2. Set up the search criteria by entering album and artist names, then click Next.
  3. Select the song information you want to apply from the drop-down menu at the top if more than 1 search result is found. This step allows you to update the song information.
  4. Click Update to apply the preferred search results of song information to the songs you have selected.

To view or edit music information:

  1. Select one or more music files, and right-click to choose Song information.
  2. Here you can view or modify the music file's information, or choose a language from the Codepage drop-down menu to convert non-Unicode text to Unicode and display the text in the correct language (System default is the codepage you specified at Control Panel > Regional Options > Language).
  3. You may click the Next or Previous button to browse to or edit the next or previous music information of the song on the list consecutively.
  4. Click Save when finished.

To edit song lyrics:

  1. Select one music file, and right-click to choose Song information.
  2. Click the Lyrics tab to modify the lyrics for the song. If no lyrics is shown in the window, click Search Internet to search lyrics on the Internet.
  3. The search results will be displayed in the window that appears. You can preview the beginning few lines of the lyrics if available. Select a result and click OK to apply.
  4. You may click the Next or Previous button to browse to or edit the lyrics of the next or previous song on the list consecutively.
  5. Click Save when finished.

Ratings

Rating your songs can help you simplify the process of sorting and managing your music. In the Library tab, you can select By Rating to see songs sorted by their ratings. It can also be added as a rule when you create a smart playlist.

Average Ratings

Average ratings (blue stars) appear when you sort songs by album, artist, composer, and genre. Average ratings are calculated by the ratings of the songs in that specific category and therefore cannot be edited.

Display Additional Attributes

You can display additional attributes of your music to show them in new columns of the main section.

To display additional attributes:

  1. Hover the pointer over any column header of the main section, and click the downward arrow that appears to the right of the header.
  2. From the pop-up menu, choose the Columns submenu.
  3. Tick the checkboxes next to the extra attributes to show them in new columns.

Record Diagnostic Log

The log can help determine the cause of the problem when you contact Synology Support for assistance.

To manage Audio Station communication log:

  1. Click Settings and then click the Options tab.
  2. Tick Enable Audio Station log for diagnosis and click OK. You can download or clear the recorded log by clicking Download or Clear.

Add Music to Playing Queue

There are different ways to add your songs from the library or playlists to the playing queue for playback.

Download Music

You can enable music download and then download songs from Audio Station to your local computer.

To enable music download:

  1. Click Settings and then click the Options tab.
  2. Tick Enable music download.
