DS file Help
DS file allows you to manage files on your DiskStation easily with your Android mobile device.
Before You Start
Before you access DiskStation with DS file, make sure the network settings of your mobile device and the DiskStation are correct, and the WebDAV service is enabled on the DiskStation.
To enable DiskStation's WebDAV service:

Log in to DiskStation as admin or a user belonging to the administrators group.

Go to Main Menu > Control Panel > WebDAV.

Tick Enable WebDAV or Enable WebDAV HTTPS connection (if you want your connection to be protected with the SSL/TLS mechanism).

Click OK.
Login and Logout
When you launch DS file for the first time, you can enter the login information on the login screen to log in to DS file.
To log in to DS file:

Enter DiskStation's IP address (or DDNS hostname) and your user credentials in the fields. If you want to choose a login information from the list of your login history or available DiskStations in LAN (with WebDAV enabled), tap the arrow button next to the URL field, and then make your selection.
Note:

If you want to delete an entry from the list of login history, tap and hold the entry and then tap OK. Or, press the menu button, and tap Delete All History to delete all entries.

If you are unable to log in with your user credentials, log in to DSM as admin (or a user belonging to the administrators group) and enable your access privilege to WebDAV (at Main Menu > Control Panel > Application Privileges).

If you want your connection to be protected with the SSL/TLS mechanism, select the HTTPS checkbox. Make sure the WebDAV HTTPS connection is enabled on your DiskStation before doing so.

Tap Login.
To check your login information:
After logging in to DS file, press the menu button and then choose Settings. You can see your login information in the Login Information section.
To log out of DS file:
After logging in to DS file, press the menu button and then choose Logout.
Note:
If you quit DS file without logging out, it will save your login information and log in automatically when you launch DS file next time.
Sync with Cloud Station
With DS file, you can sync files on your mobile devices with the Cloud Station of your DiskStation.
Note:
Files can only be synced by Cloud Station under the following circumstances:
- The file size is less than 10MB.
- The file type is any of the following:
.doc, .ppt, .xls, .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, .odt, .ods, .odp, .epub, .mobi, .prc, .pdf, .txt, .html, .htm
To connect your mobile device to Cloud Station:
- Press the menu button and tap Settings. Tick Cloud Station Service to have DS file start syncing files with Cloud Station.
Note: Please make sure your Cloud Station is updated to version 1.0_2236 or onward to have the Cloud Station service enabled properly.
- Do the following to configure the DiskStation you want to sync with, and then tap OK:
- Enter the name of your mobile device in the Device name field, and IP address or the QuickConnect ID of your DiskStation in the Address or QuickConnect ID field.
Note: To find your QuickConnect ID, log in to DSM as admin (or a user belonging to the administrators group), go to Main Menu > Cloud Station > Cloud Station, and then check the information in the QuickConnect Info section.
- Enter your DSM user credentials in the Account and Password field.
Note: If you are unable to connect to the DiskStation or authorize using your user credentials, check your network settings, and make sure your access to Cloud Station has been enabled by your DSM administrator (at Main Menu > Cloud Station > User Privileges).
- Once the connection of your mobile device is established with Cloud Station, a CloudStation folder with a cloud icon will be automatically created in Local.
- If this is your first time connecting to Cloud Station, the folder will be named as CloudStation.
- If you are connecting to the same Cloud Station as you last synced with, you can choose whether you want to merge the folder on its DiskStation with the existing folder on your mobile device:
- Tap Yes to merge the files contained in the folder on DiskStation with the folder created last time when you set up the DiskStation for syncing.
- Tap No, then the currently existing folder will be renamed to CloudStation-[number], and a new folder will be created and named as CloudStation.
- If you are connecting to another Cloud Station which is not the one you set up last time, the currently existing folder will also be renamed to CloudStation-[number], and a new folder will be created and named as CloudStation. Tap OK to continue.
Note: The [number] will be replaced with a numeric character starting with 1 which represents the number of times files on Cloud Station were synced with your mobile device in the past. For example, if this is the third time you set up a DiskStation for syncing, the previously created folder will be renamed as CloudStation-2 while the newly-created folder for this time will be named as CloudStation.
To disconnect your mobile device from Cloud Station:
Press the menu button, tap Settings, and then tap Cloud Station Service and Yes to stop syncing files with Cloud Station.
To view your syncing tasks:
Tap the Tasks tab at the top of the screen, and in the Cloud Station section you can see a list of synced files or folders and their file operations.
To check your connection information:
Press the menu button and tap Settings. In the Cloud Station Service section, you can view your connection information and connection status. You can tap Connection Status to pause or resume the Cloud Station service.
To manage sync settings:
Press the menu button and tap Settings. In the Cloud Station Service section, tick Wi-Fi sync only if you want to sync files only when the Wi-Fi mode is enabled on your mobile device.
Browse Files
Browsing files stored on your DiskStation and your mobile device is intuitive and easy.
To browse files on DiskStation:
After logging in to DiskStation, you will see a list of shared folders accessible by your user account. Tap any folder to view its files and sub-folders. Press the back button on your mobile device to return to the previous location.
Note: For more information about DSM users' access privilege to DiskStation shared folders, refer to Chapter 7 of Synology DiskStation User's Guide (available at Synology's Download Center).
To browse files on your mobile device, do either of the following:

On the login screen, tap the arrow button next to the IP field, and then tap Local.

After logging in to DiskStation, tap the Local tab at the top of the screen to browse a list of files or folders.
To filter files or folders for quick navigation:
Press the menu button and tap Filter. Enter any letters, numbers, or special characters in the text field to filter the files or folders whose file name contains any of these characters out of the list of files or folders.
Open and Share Files
With DS file, you can easily open files and share its link with other users.
Note: DS file supports the following file formats:
- Microsoft Office file:
.doc, .docx, .ppt, .pptx, .xls, .xlsx
- Text file:
.txt, .htm, .html
- PDF file:
.pdf
- Image file:
.jpg, .jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, tiff
- Audio file:
.mp3, .m4a, .wav, .aac, .3gp, .wav
- Video file:
.mp4, .m4v, .mov
To open a file:
Tap and hold a file and then choose Open.
To share a file stored on your mobile device with other users via email, do either of the following:
- Tap and hold a file and then choose Email File to send the file to your friends via email.
- Tap a file, press the menu button, and choose Email File.
Note: Make sure you have created an email account on your mobile device before performing this action.
To share a link of the file stored on DiskStation with other users via email, do either of the following:
- Tap and hold a file and then choose Email Link to send the file's link to other DSM users via email.
- Tap a file, press the menu button, and choose Email Link.
They can download the linked file by entering their DSM username and password.
To create Home screen shortcuts for your files:
Tap and hold a file and then choose Home screen shortcut. The shortcut will be created on the Home screen of your mobile device for quick access.
To refresh a single or a list of files or folders:
Press the menu button and then tap Refresh.
To set the sort order for files on the file lists:
Press the menu button and tap Settings > Sort by. Choose a sort order according to your preference.
Upload and Download Files
With DS file, you can easily upload and download DiskStation files.
To upload local files to DiskStation:
- Tap the DiskStation tab at the top of the screen, and browse to the upload destination within any shared folder. Press the menu button and choose Add > Upload. DS file will bring you to a folder on your mobile device.
- Browse to a list of files, and tick the checkboxes next to the files to make your selection (or press the menu button and choose Mark all or Unmark all to select or deselect all files).
- Once the files are selected, press the menu button and then tap Done.
- If you want to check the upload status, tap the Tasks tab at the top of the screen. See Monitor Background Tasks below for more information.
To download files from DiskStation to your mobile device, do either of the following:
- Tap and hold a file and then choose Download. Choose Download and open if you want to open the file once the download task is completed.
- Tap a file, press the menu button, and choose Download.
The file will be downloaded to the default download path. See To change the download path below for more information about download path.
If you want to check the download status, tap the Tasks tab at the top of the screen. See Monitor Background Tasks below for more information.
To change the download path:
- Press the menu button and tap Settings > Download path.
- Browse to the folder you want to set as the default download folder. Press the menu button and tap Done to finish.
Modify File Structure
DS file offers a variety of file management features to best suit your needs.
To create a folder on your DiskStation:

Browse to the location where you want to create the new folder. Press the menu button and choose Add > Create Folder.

Enter a name for the folder and tap OK.
To create a folder on your mobile device:

Browse to the location where you want to create the new folder. Press the menu button and choose Add.

Enter a name for the folder and tap OK.
To copy or move files on your DiskStation:

Browse to a list of files or sub-folders, press the menu button, and tap Edit. Tick the checkboxes next to the files or sub-folders to make your selection.

Press the menu button, choose Copy or Move, and select one of the following destinations:
- Local Files: Choose this option to copy or move files to your mobile device.
- DiskStation: Choose this option to copy or move files to your DiskStation.

On the list of DiskStation shared folders, tap a shared folder and browse to the destination folder.

Press the menu button, and tap Copy Here or Move Here to copy or move the selected files or folders.

Browse to the destination folder, press the menu button, and choose Refresh to see the copied or moved files or folders.

If you want to check the copying or moving status, tap the Tasks tab at the top of the screen. See Monitor Background Tasks below for more information.
Note:
-
You cannot copy or move files on your mobile device using DS file.
-
While moving or copying files or folders, if the destination folder already contains files or folders with the same name, DS file will cancel the action to prevent destination files or folders from being overwritten.
To rename a file or folder:

Browse to a list of files or folders on your DiskStation or mobile device, tap and hold the file or folder you want to rename, and choose Rename File.

Enter a new name for the file or folder, and then tap OK.
To delete files or folders, do either of the following:
- If you want do delete one single file,
tap and hold the file or folder you want to delete, and tap Delete and OK.
- If you want to delete multiple files at a time:
- Browse to a list of files or folders on your DiskStation or mobile device, press the menu button, and tap Edit.
- Tick the checkboxes next to the files or folders to make your selection.
- Press the menu button again, tap Delete, and tap OK.
Monitor Background Tasks
The Background Tasks screen displays a list of all background tasks and their status to help you monitor your upload, download, copying, and moving tasks.
To access the Background Tasks screen:
When you are browsing files on your DiskStation or mobile device, tap the Tasks tab at the top of the screen to view your background tasks.
To manage background tasks:

Do any of the following:

Tap and hold a task and choose Detail to view its detail.

Tap and hold a task and choose Delete to remove it from the list.

Press the menu button and choose Clear > Clear All or Clear Finished to remove all or finished tasks from the list.
Warning: If DS file is performing upload/download tasks, choosing Clear All will also cancel all ongoing tasks. Please proceed with caution.

Tap OK to confirm.
To leave the background tasks screen:
When you are at the Tasks screen, tap the DiskStation or Local tab at the top of the screen, or press the back button on your mobile device to return to the list of files on your DiskStation or mobile device.
