DS file Help

DS file allows you to manage files on your DiskStation easily with your Android mobile device.

Before You Start

Before you access DiskStation with DS file, make sure WebDAV service is enabled on the DiskStation.

To enable DiskStation's WebDAV service:

  1. Log in to DiskStation as admin or a user belonging to the administrators group.
  2. Go to Main Menu > Control Panel > Web Services, and then click the WebDAV tab.
  3. Tick Enable WebDAV and click OK.

Login and Logout

When you launch DS file for the first time, you will see the login screen, allowing you to log in by manually entering the login information, or by having DS file fill in the information automatically for you.

To log in to DS file by entering the login information:

On the login screen, enter DiskStation's IP address and your DSM user credentials in the fields, and then tap Login.

To have DS file fill in the login information for you:

On the login screen, tap the arrow button next to the IP field. Here you will see the following sections:

Tap any entry to return to the login screen where part of the login information is filled in automatically. Enter the remaining information, and then tap Login.

To check your login information:

After logging in to DS file, press the menu button and choose Settings. You can see your login information under the Login Information section.

To log out of DS file:

After logging in to DS file, press the menu button and choose Settings > Logout. Tap OK to confirm.

Browse Files

Browsing files stored on your DiskStation and your mobile device is intuitive and easy.

To browse files on DiskStation:

After logging in to DiskStation, you will see a list of shared folders accessible by your user account. Tap any folder to view its files and sub-folders. Press the back button on your mobile device to return to the previous location.

Note: For more information about DSM user's access privilege to DiskStation shared folders, refer to Chapter 8 of Synology DiskStation User's Guide (available at Synology's Download Center).

To browse files on your mobile device, do any of the following:

Open and Share Files

With DS file, you can easily open files and share its link with other users.

To open a file:

Tap a file and choose Open.

To share a file's link with other users via email:

Tap a file and choose Email Link to send the file's link to other DSM users via email. They can download the linked file by entering their DSM username and password.

Note: Make sure you have created an email account on your mobile device before performing this action.

To create Home screen shortcuts for your files:

Tap a file and choose Home screen shortcut. The shortcut will be created on the Home screen of your mobile device for quick access.

Upload or Download Files

With DS file, you can easily upload and download DiskStation files .

To upload files to DiskStation:

  1. If you are browsing files on your mobile device, press the menu button and choose Remote Files to browse DiskStation files.
  2. Browse to the upload destination within any shared folder. Press the menu button and choose Add > Upload. DS file will bring you to a folder on your mobile device.
  3. Browse to a list of files , tick the checkboxes next to the files to make your selection (or press the menu button and choose Mark all or Unmark all to select or deselect all files), and then tap the Upload button.
  4. If you want to check the upload status, press the menu button and choose Tasks. See Monitor Background Tasks below for more information.

To download files to your mobile device:

  1. If you are browsing files on your mobile device, press the menu button and choose Remote Files to browse DiskStation files.
  2. After you see the file you want to download, tap it and choose Download. The file will be downloaded to the default download path. (See To change the download path below for more information about download path.)
  3. If you want to check the download status, press the menu button and choose Tasks. See Monitor Background Tasks below for more information.

To change the download path:

  1. When you are browsing files on DiskStation or mobile device, press the menu button and choose Settings > Download path.
  2. Browse to the folder you want to set as the default download folder, and tap the Done button to finish.

Modify File Structure

DS file offers a variety of file management features to best suit your needs.

To create a folder on your DiskStation:

  1. If you are browsing files on your mobile device, press the menu button and choose Remote Files to browse DiskStation files.
  2. Browse to the location where you want to create the new folder. Press the menu button and choose Add > Create Folder.
  3. Enter a name for the folder and tap OK.

To create a folder on your mobile device:

  1. If you are browsing files on your DiskStation, press the menu button and choose Local Files to browse files on your mobile device.
  2. Browse to the location where you want to create the new folder. Press the menu button and choose Create Folder.
  3. Enter a name for the folder and tap OK.

To copy or move files on your DiskStation:

  1. Browse to a list of files or sub-folders, tap the Edit button, and tick the checkboxes next to the files or sub-folders to make your selection.
  2. Press the menu button and choose Copy or Move.
  3. On the list of DiskStation shared folders, tap a shared folder and browse to the destination folder.
  4. Tap the Copy Here or Move Here button to copy or move the selected files or folders.
  5. Tap the Done button to finish.
  6. Browse to the destination folder, press the menu button, and choose Refresh to see the copied or moved files or folders.
  7. If you want to check the copying or moving status, press the menu button and choose Tasks. See Monitor Background Tasks below for more information.
    Note:
  1. You cannot copy or move files on your mobile device using DS file.
  2. While moving or copying files or folders, if the destination folder already contains files or folders with the same name, DS file will cancel the action to prevent destination files or folders from being overwritten.

To rename a file or folder:

  1. Browse to a list of files or folders on your DiskStation or mobile device, tap the Edit button, and tick the checkbox next to the file or folder you want to rename.
  2. Press the menu button and choose Rename File.
  3. Enter a new name for the file or folder, and then tap OK.
  4. Tap the Done button to finish.

To delete files:

  1. Browse to a list of files or folders on your DiskStation or mobile device, tap the Edit button, and tick the checkboxes next to the files or folders to make your selection.
  2. Press the menu button and then choose Delete.
  3. Tap OK to confirm.
  4. Tap the Done button to finish.

Monitor Background Tasks

The Background Tasks screen displays a list of all background tasks and their status to help you monitor your upload, download, copying, and moving tasks.

To access the Background Tasks screen:

When you are browsing files on your DiskStation or mobile device, press the menu button and choose Tasks.

To manage background tasks:

  1. Do any of the following:
  2. Tap OK to confirm.

To leave the Background Tasks screen:

When you are at the Background Tasks screen, press the back button on your mobile device to return to the list of files on your DiskStation or mobile device.
